It’s easy to think of Presidents’ Day as a time to hunt for sales or enjoy an extra day off. When we think of the third Monday in February, we think about a city that has been shaped by history — and shaped it right back.
It began right from the beginning when, well, General George Washington took up residence in Cambridge in 1775, making the former Vassall estate on Brattle Street his headquarters during the early days of the American Revolution. That house still stands today, now known as the Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site.
While closed in winter, it’s a fitting backdrop for a long weekend of fun and discovery. Here’s how we might spend 72 hours exploring Cambridge’s presidential spirit and so many other things the city has to offer.
Day 1: From Curiosity to Culinary Delights
Start at the Museum of Science, where the exhibits remind us that discovery is at the heart of human progress. Spend time at the “Innovation: Earth” exhibit, which shines a light on the ways we live, move, eat and work in a carbon neutral world. You’ll uncover a variety of ways scientists, engineers, and local communities are working together to restore and enhance natural climate regulation systems.
After fueling your curiosity, head to the free Harvard Art Museums. Wander through galleries filled with works from ancient civilizations to modern masters. The museum’s intimate layout makes it easy to lose yourself in front of a Rothko or Rembrandt, imagining the stories these pieces could tell.
Then walk in the footsteps of presidents and scholars with a student-led Trademark Tour of Harvard University or MIT. The tours focus on history, architecture and student life, as well as the influential figures who have shaped these storied institutions, from John Adams to John F. Kennedy.
Cap your first day with dinner at Pagu, which was recently awarded MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand honors for outstanding food at a great value. The inventive menu from Chef Tracy Chang, brings together Spanish and Japanese influences in surprising ways — from tapas to bao. It’s a meal that reflects Cambridge itself: a mashup of cultures, ideas, and flavors.
Day 2: Sweet Treats, Stories, and Soulful Flavors
No long weekend is complete without a little indulgence. Start your second day with a Harvard Square Donut Tour. You’ll sample some of the best sweet treats in town while learning about the quirky history of Harvard Square. Prefer something savory? Try the Central Square Food and Mural Arts Tour, where you’ll explore the area’s diverse culinary scene and vibrant street art.
In the afternoon, catch The Hasty Pudding Theatricals’ musical comedy production of “Salooney Tunes”. The performance follows an outlaw’s failed gold heist journey and the ensuing chaos involving a corrupt mayor and cast of eccentric townsfolk in Goldendamaire Hills. This is one you won’t want to miss!
For dinner, treat yourself at Gustazo Cuban Kitchen & Bar, where chef and owner Patricia Estorino, a 2024 James Beard Award semifinalist in the northeast region, delivers Cuban cuisine served with a fresh, modern twist. The ropa vieja and crispy yucca fries will make you feel like you’ve been whisked away to Havana, if only for an hour.
Later, head to Landmark Kendall Square Cinema for a cozy evening watching an indie film or documentary. The theater’s eclectic lineup makes it a perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day on your feet.
Day 3: Imagination, Adventure, and Hidden Gems
Spend your final morning exploring Rome without leaving Cambridge! Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition® is open at CambridgeSide through May 10, 2026. Admire the iconic artwork up close and observe every detail, brushstroke, and expression. Then, grab lunch next door at CanalSide Food + Drink. Featuring 13 restaurants–from local favorites to new spots–CanalSide offers spectacular waterfront views, a centrally located bar, and a fantastic experience.
If you’re feeling adventurous, lace up your skates for some outdoor ice skating at Skate @ Canal District Kendall, a charming spot on a winter afternoon. Glide along the ice rink with the city skyline as your backdrop.
For your farewell dinner, head to Giulia, which made OpenTable’s top 100 list in 2024 and was named a MICHELIN Guide recommended restaurant in 2025. Handmade pastas, warm ambiance, and impeccable service make it a perfect place to toast your weekend. Don’t skip the pappardelle with wild boar—it’s a dish people talk about long after their plates are cleared.
Cambridge is a city that invites curiosity at every turn. It’s where George Washington plotted revolution, where Nobel laureates have made groundbreaking discoveries and where visitors come to experience something new. You might just find a spark of inspiration to carry back home with you.
