Inside Harvard Square’s Newest Inn: Cambridge Common House

Cambridge Common House, Cambridge’s latest accommodation, has officially opened its doors! Located in the historic Howe house and just steps away from Harvard University, Cambridge Common House is a place where charm and modern intellect combine to create a home away from home for guests!

History of Howe House

Cambridge Common House’s story began in 1835 when Sarah Howe, widow of an esteemed Massachusetts judge, purchased the land with her inheritance. She enlisted her neighbor, William Saunders, to build a home where she could raise her five children, and eventually her grandchildren, including Lois Lilley Howe, one of the first women to graduate from MIT’s architectural program. Shortly after its construction, the tradition of hospitality at Two Garden Street began when Sarah opened her home to Harvard University students and professors for boarding. The home served as a gathering place for students, artists, and intellects, with its garden even hosting Harvard Dramatic Club performances.

Two Garden Street has had a front row seat to nearly two centuries of Cambridge history. Today, Lark Hotels and Cambridge Common House honor the past of the property and Sarah Howe’s tradition of hospitality by welcoming guests back into the home.

With 16 guest rooms and 1 suite, plus cozy amenities like private patios and gas fireplaces, Cambridge Common House offers a luxurious retreat with a homey feel. The guest rooms were carefully designed by Boutique Design’s 2023 Designer of the Year, Megan Kennedy and Rob Blood of Elder & Ash. Each room is uniquely decorated and pays homage to the city of Cambridge, with rooms named after historical figures and local landmarks, like The Washington, The Brattle, and The Charles.
