MIT Museum After Dark: Trip in Deep Time

April 9 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

For those who have ever wished to hold the wisdom of an ancient forest or longed to uncover the secrets of mountains forged in the age of dinosaurs, this event offers a unique journey through time. Guests are invited to an evening of celebration and contemplation, exploring the human role as both ancestors and descendants of generations past and future.

Start with a soundbath that transcends eras designed by DJ and musician Joseph Ntaimo. Then join the poetic geologist Marcia Bjornerud and the pioneering inventor Danny Hillis in conversation with guest curators Cristina Parreno Alonso and Bina Venkataraman in a lively exploration of the meaning people can find today by taking the long view – whether reading the rocks that tell Earth’s story or building a clock to last 10,000 years.

Participants will have the opportunity to create their own visions for the distant future by drafting letters or drawings for a deep-time archive. They can also explore the Museum’s “deep timeline,” spanning from the Big Bang to the present day, or meet artist Janet Echelman beneath her work Remembering the Future, a luminous canopy designed to inspire reflection on the timescales of climate change.

Indulge like a time-traveling ancestor with wine, beer, mocktails and bites for purchase, by Tracy Chang of Pagu.
